Week 22

Context

This week I focused on the research for my FMP. Building on last week’s context, this stage was about deepening my understanding of the story, technical approach, and visual style of the project before moving into production.

My project explores BJJ through moments and perspective, aiming to show how the sport feels rather than simply documenting what happens. Because of this, my research focused heavily on how reality can be interpreted differently depending on perspective.

The target audience remains 16-30 year olds, particularly those interested in sport, storytelling, and cinematic content. This audience is used to consuming visually driven media on platforms like YouTube, where storytelling is often shaped through editing, pacing, and atmosphere rather than direct explanation.

Research

Technical

For the technical side of my research, I explored all the methods I plan to use during production, including both original footage and found footage.

I researched how found footage can be used effectively in storytelling, particularly how it can add context, contrast, or meaning when combined with original footage.

I also explored how I will record my intro narration using my DJI and it’s microphone, focusing on how to achieve clean, professional audio.

To support this, I compared different recording setups and techniques, including external microphones vs built-in camera audio, to ensure I achieve the best sound quality possible.

This technical research helped me plan how I will capture both high-quality visuals and audio, while also combining different types of media effectively.

Story

The main focus of my research this week was on storytelling, perspective, and reality.

I explored how the same situation can be interpreted differently depending on how it is filmed, edited, and presented. This links directly to my project idea, as I want to show that BJJ is not just about winning or losing, but about experience, feeling, and interpretation.

I also carried out a BJJ case study, looking at how the sport is usually presented in the media. Most content focuses on highlights, submissions and competition wins. However, this often ignores the smaller, more meaningful moments such as training, repetition, and personal development.

I also analysed how sports content often simplifies reality into clear outcomes, while my project aims to present a more layered and reflective perspective.

This research helped me shape my project into something that focuses on how BJJ feels rather than just what happens.

Style

Stylistically, this week I explored a range of influences that will shape the look and feel of my project.

I analysed Nike campaigns, which often use powerful visuals and emotional storytelling to create impact.

I also looked at NOWNESS films, which focus on cinematic visuals, slow pacing, and artistic storytelling.

In addition, I explored short sports documentaries, which often combine realism with cinematic techniques to create engaging content.

From these influences, I identified key stylistic elements I want to use:

  • slow and controlled pacing
  • close up detail shots
  • natural sound combined with music
  • minimal dialogue
  • strong visual composition

Practical Skills

This week was focused on research and development, but I still developed important practical planning skills like,

This stage helped prepare me for the production phase, ensuring I have a clear plan before filming begins.

Evaluation and Reflection

What Went Well

  • I developed a much deeper understanding of storytelling and perspective.
  • The BJJ case study helped me clearly define how my project will be different from typical sports content.
  • I explored a wide range of technical options, giving me confidence for filming.

Even Better If

  • I could begin testing some of the filming techniques earlier to refine my style.
  • I could organise my research more visually to make it easier to refer back to.
  • I could start building a detailed shot list based on my research findings.
