Week 5

Context

This week, our task was to improve the Atletico vs. Real Madrid match commentary video. The original version had poor editing, with mismatched crowd audio and unbalanced commentary levels. My goal was to combine the source with crowd effects to create a smoother highlight package. The target audience remains sports fans aged 35–50, who regularly watch YouTube football highlights and prefer fast-paced, authentic content with natural crowd reactions and clear commentary. The intended platform is YouTube, with a duration of 3–5 minutes.

Research

Technical

I used Adobe Audition to combine the commentary and clean FX tracks, as it’s the industry standard due to its multi-track editing, advanced audio control, and precise timeline features. I also used Adobe Premiere Pro to join the audio package with the highlights package. In addition, the main piece of hardware I used was my laptop—this is because I’m able to complete my work at school as well as at home, and also, Mac is suitable for Audition and Premiere Pro

Story

I researched Sports Football YouTube highlights and noted that strong storytelling in football editing depends heavily on audio continuity—especially maintaining crowd FX to preserve emotion and realism.

So, by combining the clean FX track with better commentary pacing, I aimed to tell the story of the match through energy shifts in crowd noise, not just visuals.

Style

For inspiration, I researched the La Liga Official Highlights channel. I noticed that both used quick, seamless commentary.

I applied a similar approach—fast-paced editing with shortcuts and consistent background sound. I also kept the natural crowd audible even during commentary to maintain immersion.

Practical Skills

I used multi-track audio editing to combine the commentary and clean FX tracks effectively. By layering and balancing each track separately, I maintained the natural crowd atmosphere while improving commentary clarity.

During editing, I focused on syncing both video and audio layers precisely to preserve the match’s realism

Evaluation and Reflection

What went well:

  • Matched the pace and energy of the highlight through tighter cuts and transitions.
  • Used multiple audio tracks (multi-track), which improved workflow and organization.
  • Achieved realistic crowd immersion, which is similar to professional broadcasts

Even better if:

  • I went and gathered feedback from my peers and teacher to evaluate what my final product was and make improvements
  • I explored noise reduction techniques to clean up commentary clips with background hum or uneven volume.
  • I compared different export settings to see which produces the best visual quality while keeping file sizes small.
