Week 1

Context

This week I have been developing my WordPress website by incorporating a range of features to enhance its functionality and presentation. I ensured that my previous work, current projects, and Final Major Project are clearly showcased. In addition, I created new pages, including this weekly log, and organised it within the site as a dedicated blog section to document my ongoing progress.

What did I do?

This week I concentrated on learning how to structure and organise my website so any information can be accessed easily. The focus was on setting up clear navigation, adding sections such as weekly logs, and ensuring that pages connect logically. We worked with WordPress, which is a content management system designed for building and managing websites. It is free to use, adaptable, and provides a wide range of creative options. Currently, WordPress powers over 42% of all websites across the internet.

Why did I do it?

We wanted a platform that would help us build confidence in presenting our ideas online while also giving us practical industry experience. Using WordPress meant we could practice skills that are relevant to real careers in media, such as publishing, design, and digital communication. It wasn’t just about having a place to upload our projects but about learning how to maintain a professional online presence that could support our future opportunities.

Practical Skills

WordPress was a platform I had worked with previously, but I needed to update and adjust certain elements so that they felt relevant and suited to my current projects. At first this was challenging, because I had to familiarise myself with the new layout and tools, but the more i explored, it became more straightforward and easier to navigate.

I made use of several features available on WordPress, but the one I found most useful was the embeds and the theme features. It allowed me to structure my pages clearly, insert images and headings with ease, and keep the overall design consistent across the site.

Furthermore, working with these tools gave me the chance to improve my digital organisation skills, ensuring that my website is not only visually engaging but also functional and user-friendly for anyone viewing my work.

Evaluation and Reflection

What Went Well? (WWW)

  • I developed a stronger sense of how to structure the website so it appears neat and organised as a whole.
  • I customised the template by adjusting elements such as the header and colour scheme to better reflect my style.
  • Experimented with fonts, sizes, and spacing to make the site more readable.

Even Better If? (EBI)

  • Could improve the site by making it more interactive with polls, comments, or feedback forms.
  • I could experiment with different plugins or widgets to extend functionality.
  • I need to build a deeper understanding of functions to organise them more effectively.
