Week 2

Context

This week I focused on developing my audio editing skills across Adobe Audition. My main task was to create professional highlights packages, including kick-off, goals and full-time for two football matches, specifically Newcastle vs Aston Villa and Barcelona vs Newcastle. My target audience was males aged 18-30, who are football fans. I will platform this on Spotify.

Research

Technical
For the Newcastle vs. Aston Villa edit, I used Adobe Audition because it’s an industry-standard audio editing software designed for detailed editing, precise cuts, and multitrack projects. In addition, the main piece of hardware I used was my laptop—this is because I’m able to complete my work at school as well as at home, and also Mac is suitable for Audition

Story
My narrative will be similar to the Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham highlights package. This includes a kickoff, goals and full time.

Stylistic
My inspiration came from short sports highlight shows, such as the Manchester United vs Chelsea game, which target audiences who want quick, engaging recaps rather than full matches. Bearing this in mind, my edits aimed to resemble professional highlight reels—tight, energetic, and clear.

Practical Skills

Within one week, I developed my precision in audio editing using Adobe Audition. For example, when isolating the commentary for the Newcastle vs Aston Villa match, I zoomed in and cut directly on the spike of the crowd cheer, ensuring the edit was clean. An example is down below.

I also improved my ability to work to tight deadlines when producing the Barcelona vs Newcastle highlights package. I made a decision to prioritise goals and key commentary over longer build-up play to ensure the edit flowed quickly and smoothly.

My storytelling skills improved by shaping the highlights into a natural narrative. For example, I opened with the first goal, layered commentary tightly, and ended with a final crowd cheer to maintain audience engagement.

To support my process, I used online resources such as

Evaluation and Reflection

What went well:

  • I successfully identified and edited all six goals from the Newcastle vs Aston Villa game with clear commentary, which gave me confidence in handling long-form content.
  • In the Barcelona vs Newcastle task, I managed to deliver under time constraints, which showed that I can adapt my workflow to meet deadlines.
  • I was able to create loops of specific parts of the music, ensuring everything was coherent.

Even better if:

  • I could refine my work in Adobe Audition to speed up the process of finding key moments without having to listen and go through all sorts of audio as much.
  • In edits that are time-sensitive, I could improve my ability to cut tighter highlights while maintaining smooth transitions.
  • I could improve my transitions in between clips (for example, using crowd noises to blend clips together).
