Week 26

Context

For this week I completed the final edit of my FMP. After multiple weeks of planning, research, filming, organising footage, and refining the edit, this week focused on bringing everything together into the completed doc.

My project explores BJJ through a more cinematic point of view, focusing on atmosphere, movement, detail, and emotion rather than simply documenting competition or results.

The target audience remains 16–30-year-olds who are interested in cinematic storytelling and combat sports

Because this audience regularly consumes high quality sports media online, I wanted the final piece to feel immersive, emotionally engaging, and professionally edited.

This week mainly focused on final edits and making sure my whole documentary felt complete and polished.

Research

Technical

This week technical research was mainly about finalising and exporting a professional video project.

I researched things like colour consistency (why it’s so important) and final quality control checks.

I also looked into how professional editors review projects before export to ensure there are no missing clips or awkward cuts.

This helped me prepare the documentary for final export and presentation.

Story

This week was about ensuring the documentary felt emotionally complete and flowed naturally from beginning to end.

I reviewed the project multiple times to refine the pacing, transitions and placement of music as well as narration.

I focused on making sure the final structure reflected the original concept of “The Archive” presenting BJJ through atmosphere, detail, and perspective rather than traditional sports storytelling.

I also adjusted certain sequences to ensure the audience remains engaged throughout the documentary without sections feeling repetitive or too slow.

This process helped strengthen the overall emotional impact of the final piece.

Style

Stylistically, I focused on maintaining consistency across the entire documentary.

I continued following influences such as:

This influenced the pacing, shot selection, transitions and colour tones of my documentary.

So because of this, in the final edit, I focused on making sure the documentary felt very visually consistent and immersive rather than over-edited or commercial.

Practical Skills

Since week focused on finalising and completing the documentary edit.

I refined the final sequence of the documentary, adjusted any last minute pacing changes and transitions, exported multiple test versions for review, and completed the final export for the doc.

This stage allowed me to fully combine all the work from previous weeks into one finished project.

Evaluation and Reflection

What Went Well:

  • Successfully completed the final edit of my documentary.
  • The pacing and structure now feel much more cinematic and intentional.
  • My organisation throughout the project made the editing process much smoother.

Even Better If:

  • Next time I would begin experimenting with colour grading earlier in the process.
  • I could improve efficiency by creating a more detailed edit schedule before post-production begins.
  • Some sound transitions could still be refined further for even smoother blending.
